I am continuously looking for cleansers that hydrate my dry skin. I normally do the double cleansing at night time only. Therefore, in the morning I need a cleanser that eliminates properly the dirt accumulated overnight without drying my skin. In the research of the ideal cleanser, I recently used the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Facial Cleanser and I am going to review it in this post.
What does the brand say?
NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost® Water Gel Cleanser is an innovative cleanser that activates with water to remove impurities whilst providing skin with an essential boost of hydration. By combining NEUTROGENA® cleansing technology, hydrating agents and hyaluronic acid the formula protects the skin barrier, boosts hydration and helps to lock it in. The skin is refreshingly clean and touchably supple every time you cleanse. Dermatologically tested and suitable for sensitive skin.

How to use Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel
First, wet face. Second, dispense one pump on the hands, add water and work into a lather. Then, massage the face gently. Finally, rinse thoroughly.
Price and availability
This product is widely available from most drugstores and online cosmetic retailers such as Lookfantastic. The price is £5.49 for 200 mL.
My opinion about Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel
About the packaging
This product is available in a 200 mL pack size. It comes in a blue plastic bottle with a pump dispenser. The bottle has a transparent sticker with the brand and product names, ingredient list, and other useful information.
The pump dispenses the right amount of product you need to wash your full face. It is easy to dispense even with wet hands. I found, however, something negative on that packaging, it is not easy to pump the last amount of product remaining when it is almost finished. You need to keep the bottle upside down and unscrew the pump dispenser to use all the product.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Texture and Smell
The product has an aqueous gel consistency. It has the ideal texture I like, not too thick that it is hard to dispense and not too runny that goes between your fingers.
The texture becomes thicker when you rub the product between your hands and it transforms into a lather when you mix it with water. I love cleansers which lather and foam. I know that is not related to how efficient the product is, but stupidly I feel that if there is no lather or foam there is no cleansing.
Regarding the smell, this product has a soft smell. The scent is fresh and does not produce any discomfort on my skin or eyes. However, that may affect people with sensitive skin.
How does it work?
Because it has a gel texture and fresh scent, I have been using it as part of my morning routine and therefore there is no makeup on my skin to eliminate, only the dirt accumulated during the night and the rest of the skincare products applied the night before.
Even though I don’t have makeup to remove when using it and my skin is not too dirty, I feel this product makes a deep cleansing on my skin.
You need a small amount to wash all your face. I use only one single pump and that is enough to get a great amount of lather and get very clear skin.
That is something good, as means that the product will last for a very long time. I used one bottle of product 115 times which results in the amazing cost of 5 pennies per wash. That’s really affordable!!!!!!
How does my skin feel after using this product?
After using this cleanser I get a refreshing feeling on my face. I feel my skin deeply cleansed and, what is even more important, I don’t feel my skin dry, tight or itchy. My skin is dry and most of the cleansers I’ve tried leave my skin feeling tight if I don’t apply moisturiser straight away after washing.
It is very gentle with my skin as well as with my eyes. It does not irritate my skin or my eyes. That is extremely important for me. As I mentioned, I use this cleanser as part of my morning routine after wearing the contact lenses. With this cleanser, I don’t have eye irritation or itching after using the product while wearing my contact lenses.
What about the ingredient?
If you carefully read the ingredient list, you will find ingredients with hydrating properties and other benefits. That is the case of:
- Glycerin: Captures water molecules on the skin surface.
- Hyaluronic acid: Absorbs a high amount of water keeping, therefore, the skin hydrated.
- Citric Acid: It is an alpha-hydroxy acid which helps to keep hydration levels.
- Tocopheryl Acetate: Also called vitamin E, it is an antioxidant which helps to repair the damage caused by UV radiation.
This product does not contain alcohol, parabens, silicones or comedogenic ingredients. However, you should be careful with some of the ingredients, such as:
- Sulfates: Though they are polemic ingredients, their use is completely safe. However, people with sensitive skin should be careful as sulfates may cause irritation.
- Parfum: This ingredient also can cause irritation to some skin types.
In summary, I love this product. It is a good option for people with dry skin. It leaves my skin clean and hydrated and does not irritate my skin or eyes. I think people with any skin type can use this product.
It lasts for over 100 uses, which makes it really affordable and ideal even if you are on a budget.
